The Hoodoo Kings

The Hoodoo Kings

Telarc

Eddie Bo, Raful Neal, and Rockin’ Tabby Thomas are The Hoodoo Kings. Each sings, and they play keyboards, harmonica, and guitar, respectively. All hail from Louisiana, and each has been playing the blues for a half-century or so. Neal and Thomas each have grown children who play blues, and a joint protégé in Tab Benoit. Although The Kings had played together under other monikers (The Louisiana Legends and The District Court, inter alia), it was Benoit who got them together to make this record as The Hoodoo Kings.

As might be expected, The Kings play swamp-infused New Orleans-funkified blues. Several of the cuts on the album are penned by Thomas or Neal, making up just over half the 13 songs. Covers include other Louisiana acts like Clifton Chenier and Lenny McDaniel, as well as Ivory Joe Hunter, and even Bob Dylan and Sonny Curtis (“I Fought the Law”). Solid swampy blues.
