The Philadelphia Experiment
The Philadelphia Experiment 12-inch
Rope-a-Dope/Atlantic
As adventurous as Indiana Jones and funkier than any recent Prince record, what I believe is The Experiment’s debut 12-inch bridges the gap between hot jazz and futuristic hip-hop. The drum n’ bass-laced title track says it all, with Ahmir “?estlove” Thompson of The Roots holding down the beats on his abused trap kit. Joined by bassist Christian McBride and keyboardist Uri Caine, Thompson and crew easily glide from urgent rhythms to laid-back funk with a smoky and reverberating backbone. “Calling All Demons” and “Glover” are solid on their own, but as a whole, this 12-inch is nearly invincible in the art of the groove. Forget the Fresh Prince – this is truly Philly flavor.
