Holey Moley – these Canadians couldn’t sound more Southern if you deep fried them in peanut oil and doused them in Jack Daniels. The opening “Ring Sweet Mercy” lifts a riff straight from Bad Company, but soon brings in the heavy machinery, with drums tumbling and guitars a-gonging. I’m expecting to hear a loud “wooo-oooo” in my ear and have cheap warm beer spilled down my back any second. It’s six-and-a-half minutes of fist-pumping, mullet-shaking heroics. “Lil-lay Bank Blues” is a smoldering slow number that could easily have come off from Led Zeppelin I. I’m not generally one to appreciate the subtler points of Southern riffing, but hats off to Tricky Woo for making the genre palatable once again.
