Although Jon Dee Graham’s been around for ages, this is only his third solo album. He must’ve honed his songwriting skills on the side during all those years playing other people’s material, though, because this is an utterly convincing showcase for his solidly crafted, bluesy numbers, displaying a maturity and an eagerness that most contenders in this area can only ever dream of. Although cover versions of Tom Waits’ “Way Down in the Hole” and the raucous “Volver” make a convincing case for his ability to tackle a wide variety of material, this album surely doesn’t depend on anyone’s talents but his own. With a confident, hoarse voice, brilliant instrumental performances, and songs telling late-night tales of love lost and found, this album should appeal both to fans of Tex-Mex tinged blues-rock and to the alt.country clientele.
