Accordions, Edith Piaf, and pretentious black-bereted chatter about eroticism and American foreign policy: these are the sounds most of us associate with Parisian cafes. At least the Paris of the 1950s. Well, Paris has always been a hipster city, and, while they still rant against our humble, little country, they do look towards our music for their hipster sound. And this disc is as hip and cool as an L.A. zoot suit in August. Choking with deep house, acid jazz, nu jazz, and other electronic grooves, this is 78 minutes of chill/dance tres chic-ness. The dreamy pop dance of Bertrand Burgalat, Doctor L’s broken beat jam, William Traffic’s unique dub experiments, the seductive Octet jam, and the grimy pubis funk of Ark’s “Sucubz” and Ana Rago’s “Sex” all are entertaining and comprise a jam-packed compilation (with other startling contributions from Shinju Gumi, Llorca, and Laurent Garnier) that will be hard to replace in your CD changer.
