Retuned

Primevil

The greatest perk involved with being a critic has to be the pleasant surprises: the acts you have never heard of and totally blow you away. That’s when we usually flip our wigs, get all in-the-know obnoxious, and proselytize to all who’ll listen about our latest, greatest “discovery.” I will try to be calm about Retuned, but this disc is something you havetohavetohaveto check out. It is absolutely phenomenal. Chris McCormack and friends have crafted the ultimate ultra-neo-hipster chill tome with unique blends of everything that makes music one of the seven wonders of the world. This album is subtle, smooth, and sophisticated and too damned cool to be pretentious. While I do not have the clout nor the inclination to declare masterpieces, I will say that the disc is chock full of brilliance from the erotic reverberations of “Fight The Reaper” to the trumpet/bongo dance jam a la St. Germain, “In The Shade.” McCormack is more than able to capture any mood whether it be loathing (“In Fever, In Fear”) to the ambient (“Mechanical Mover”) to just plain gettin’ down (“Returning”). In fact, he has mastered more idioms than a thesaurus. While I am still basking in the reverie, I have to strongly recommend that everyone go in for this surprise. You will not be disappointed.

Frank Henenlotter’s gory grindhouse classic Basket Case looks as grimy as the streets of Times Square, and that is one of the film’s greatest assets. Arrow Video gives this unlikely candidate a welcome fresh release.
