The first thing that strikes me about Wake Up Falling is that the vocals of Gordie Muscutt really annoy me. They’ve got a shouted, ’80s feel to them; a cross between up-tempo emo and a Britpop song from 15 years ago. The music is solid and lushly bedded in places with bells and keyboards, and the lyrics are pleasant. It all feels a bit too brash for me, though – there’s a decided lack of substance on display here.
With that said, there is a smattering of class on this disc (put out by Californian label M-Theory) – ambitious ideas and strong craftsmanship fail to succeed in some instances, but at least these guys have a vision (even if I don’t happen to be particularly enamored with it).
