Hardcore Dancehall

Volume 2

Victory World

For years labels like VP, Greensleeves and Jamdown have tried to make dancehall a mainstay in American clubs. Yet, outside of DC and New York, this bastard child of reggae has seldom reverberated from ghetto blasters. Of course, there are times (like with Buju Banton, Shabba Ranks and Beenie Man) when dancehall does earn some street creds. Now is one of those times, with Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder blaring from R&B stations nation wide.

So, for those whose taste for wining has been whetted, this is a great disc to accompany Dutty Rock in your CD changer. Some of the songs are dated (with Sean Paul’s ‘98 “You Done Rule” riddim being used in Harry Toddler and Elephant Man’s “Man a Shotta (War Dem Say)” and Cobra’s “Hot Cloths”), but the title’s by no means false advertising. This shit is hard – that hip-hop inflected dancehall that pounds with back breaking beats and makes your neck snap in the nod. It’s dirty, grimy, perverse, everything you expect from these Rude Boy progeny. Lady G, Mega Banton, Buju, Bounty Killer and Young Prince are all represented here at their bangin’est. This is a sweat-drenched, half-naked, late-night grind waiting to happen. Just pray there are a lot of big booties around so the gyrations won’t be wasted.
