The Sound of the Crowd

Oh, fuck

Bush is looking into restarting the draft, Salon says. He probably won’t call for it until after the election–if, god forbid, he wins–but they’re quietly gearing up, making sure, as one spokesman put it, the machinery is in place and oiled up in case they have to use it.

Just another one of those reminders that political expediency takes precedence over just about everything. To sustain the war at the level Bush & Co want to, a draft is probably inevitable. But they know that will blow up in their face in an election year, so we’re just going to stagger along over there and hope one of the countries we previously gave the finger to will spontaneously decide to help us out. Or we’ll bribe them. Gosh, I love being the center of moral authority in the world.
