The Sound of the Crowd

Serious, Okay?

I’m not making one of my usual smart remarks with this one. The word “hero” gets tossed around too much for my liking, because too often it’s in some kind of marshmellow maudlin context.

But, well, that’s the word that came to my mind when reading this MSNBC story about Pat Tillman, the ex-NFL star who was just lost in battle in Afghanastan. It’s not often you’ll see me praising a jock, and while I support the troops–in that I either want better care taken of them or I want them brought home–I don’t think of them all as heroes automatically, either.

But this fellow really does seem to have been quite a guy–somebody who understood sacrifice in a way not everyone does. I don’t have to name names, you know who I’m thinking of.

But I just wanted to say that. Now this is a hero.
