The Sound of the Crowd

Not That Profound, Really

Senator John Kerry said today that the war in Iraq was a “profound diversion” from the war on terror and the fight against Osama bin Laden…”

Defininitions from Dictionary.com:

Situated at, extending to, or coming from a great depth; deep.

Coming as if from the depths of one’s being: profound contempt.

Penetrating beyond what is superficial or obvious: a profound insight.

The war in Iraq was none of these things. It was a cheap, obvious and cynical shell game, and nothing lessens my resolve to vote for Kerry more than his continued insistence that it was anything else.

You know what I’d really like to see at Kerry’s first state of the union? And I know this is total fantasy among the macho men of Washington, but go with me. I’d like to see him ask people like Howard Dean, and Al Gore, and Senator Robert Byrd to stand up, and simply say:

“I was wrong. You were right.”

And as long as I’m dreaming, a drunken night with Milla Jovovich wouldn’t be too bad either.

Now back to the article. Suffice it to say I think the majority of what Kerry says here is right…but it still doesn’t matter, because he’s incapable of delivering it in a one-two punch. And why is he incapable of that? Because he’s got one hand tied behind his back by the whole “voted to give the President authority” thing.

It’s like Bush was a ten-year-old boy whose parents gave him a big stick, which he procceded to use to stir up a hornets nest. Yes, he’s the one who screwed things up–but what were they doing giving him such a big stick in the first place?

That’s kind of a piss-poor metaphor, but it’s the best I can do on the the spur of the moment.
