The Sound of the Crowd

A choice of viewing

  1. The 60 Minutes Wednesday evening show is running an interview with Ben Barnes. Barnes is the guy who got Bush into the National Guard ahead of several other candidates from less-wealthy, less-privliged families. The interview is part of a larger story about his guard service…or lack of same. Should make for some interesting headlines the next morning. Because although I expect a lot of it will be old news to those of us who read liberal sites like The Raw Story…60 Minutes is a top 20 TV show.

  1. VH1’s new season of Bands Reunited started yesterday. As you’ll recall, the premise is: This hugely enthusiastic prat–he really is, no one is that excited about a Haircut 100 reunion–called Aamer tracks down the far-flung members of some long-defunct band. They then attempt to facilitate a reunion, first personally, then for a one-off concert.

The first episode, featuring the aforementioned Haircut 100, was a bit tepid–one sensed there was more anger beneath the surface than we were allowed to see. If you catch a rerun, dig the extra hard slaps on the back most of the band give absconded singer/songwriter and now apparently gently lovable loony Nik Heyward.

Tonight’s episode featured a failed attempt to reunite New Kids on the Block. I gave it a miss, for some reason. But tomorrow’s episode is one I’m most looking forward towards.

Even an old 80s techno-pop man like me won’t kid you: Most of the bands of that era made one or two great singles at best. You can count on the fingers of one hand the truly great techno-pop albums of the ’80s. Great meaning cohesive, and listenable all the way through for more than just their hit singles. Of these, three of the best are Thompson Twins Into The Gap, Human League’s Dare, and…

The Lexicon of Love by ABC. And that’s the band our man Emir is looking to reunite twomorrow. Should be tricky, uphill work–the last time I checked Mark White had become some sort of a Buddhist monk or something.

Think he’ll be up for a rousing chorus of Look of Love or Poison Arrow or even Vanity Kills? I know I’ll be watching to find out.
