Fans: They Just Keep Going & Going

The New York Times has an article about Star Trek’s current troubles, and some fans reaction to same. The dilemma is this: Trek isn’t what it once was, so should it go away for a nice long rest in hopes the creators will be able to recharge their batteries? Or must Trek continue at all costs, no matter what?

I myself subscibe to the first theory, not just about Trek but about almost any serialized fiction, on television, in comics, or whatever. I’m a big beliver in the notion that stories have beginnings, middles, and ends, and that 97-98% of the worst television you ever see is on shows that are being pushed past their time.

I don’t think I’ve ever understood the attitude that large groups of fans have about their favorites, where anything that bears the brand name is okay by them. Even if it seems to have flipped 180 degrees from what it was when they fell in love with it.
