Guaranteed to lodge a thought: Christopher Reeve’s legacy: Stem cell research

How wrong is this question: Will the death of Christopher Reeve effect the election? Given that his tragedy is one that might have been helped by stem cell research. There’s no subtle way for Kerry to point it out without appearing ghoulish. But the ever unscientific online MSNBC poll thinks Reeve’s death will make SCR a bigger factor in the campaign. And the fact that the three most known figures who might have been or might yet be helped by it are nearly universally beloved, and in many ways iconic, helps: Ronald Reagan, Superman, and Marty McFly/Alex P. Keaton.

Satisfaction not guaranteed: The New Republic review of Tanner on Tanner.

I don’t agree with most of this. For one thing, I think it makes assumptions about Altman and Truedau’s intentions that aren’t necessarily correct: Did they really have Cynthia Nixon’s character buy shoes at Kenneth Cole as a dig at Mario Quomo, whose daughter Cole married? I could just as easily say it was a tip of the hat to Nixon’s Sex in the City friends, for whom the right pair of shoes was a soothing experience.

Always beware whenever a reviewer uses phrases like “it’s clear that they want us to think that…” and “Altman and Trudeau obviously…”. Because nine times out of ten, what they’re talking about is niether clear nor obvious.
