We’re From Japan and Andi Camp have come together to make a truly unique EP. With You Are the Vehicle, Camp and We’re From Japan swap songs as each takes two of the five and then unite for an absolutely riveting rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.” Never did I think that a remake of one of Springsteen’s songs could be better than the original. Guest vocalist Anderson Rice takes her haunting sound and molds this masterpiece into something that is not only completely different but utterly brilliant.
We’re From Japan is a highly talented instrumental rock band from Portland, Oregon. Instrumental rock is something like a fine wine. At first you’re not sure what to think about it, but the more you try it, the better it gets. We’re From Japan is not a band that will instantly go into your IPod, but they will after a few listens.
Andi Camp plays the piano in a manner reminiscent of Nellie McKay and Tori Amos. She tickles the ivory as if it is an extension of her own fingers. She does not have the quirkiness of McKay or the range of Amos, but her soft, subtle and utterly beautiful vocals perfectly compliment the quick pace of her piano skills.
You Are the Vehicle is 25 minutes of refreshment. Each song is filled with anticipation and a “what’s going to happen next” feeling. We’re From Japan and Andi Camp have made a truly remarkable EP that deserves to be heard by everyone.
