A New January

A New January

Cold and Naked

Negative Nine

A New January comes billed as “incorporating multiple influences”; it’s a shame they didn’t settle on a few. Sometimes the synth lines are you’re-soaking-in-it, the drum patterns dramatic. But the band exists at a crossroads between new wave pop synths and industrial-strength guitars, and seems unlikely to fully satisfy fans of either. Andre Filardo’s cold vocals don’t help.

A couple of interesting songs (“Uncreate” and the instrumental “Jaded” especially, and “Next To Nothing”) make them impossible to completely dismiss, but people stuck at a crossroads usually don’t know which way to go.
