The Sound of the Crowd

Oh, those were the days

Like most people I suppose, I first saw Tim Curry in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, at midnight screenings of which I used to spend far too much of my time. (But I met a couple of people who are good friends to this day, so that’s all right.)

Since then, it almost surprises me to say it, but he’s become one of my favorite performers. Curry has made a career out of pitching his performances perfectly between oversize and sincerity. From playing a gullible Russian sailor in The Hunt For Red October to singing “Easy Street” in the movie version of Annie.

His name in the opening credits of almost any movie is a sign that no matter what else I may think of the film, I will enjoy watching him. Here’s a funny radio interview; he talks about that show, but also the Monty Python musical and other things. It’s well worth a listen.
