Truth to Power

This is how it starts

This is how a dozen or more sci-fi books and movies have started. Take one natural disaster, add in a seemingly incompetent government response which allows situations to deteriorate to the point that martial law has to be implemented. And what is the first action that is taken? Confiscate private weapons.

The New York Times reported last Thursday that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that “only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons.”

Ponder why our government is so quick to strip its citizens of their basic rights in this circumstance. Second admendment? Gone. Freedom of speech? Largely gone in New Orleans. Private property? Ask the people being “evacuated” at gunpoint, in handcuffs, their animals shot, if they think they will ever see their homes again.

Color me paranoid, but ponder this. First, this storm was not unexpected, only unprepared for. Secondly, decades of gutting budgets left the feds and local governments unable to respond, which led to anarchy in the streets. End result? Our country loses a bit more liberty, and we get acclimated to the sight of armed troops roaming an American city, dragging unarmed citizens from their homes.

A perfect storm, indeed.
