Honor By August

Drowning Out The Television

Low Watt

Washington DC four-piece Honor By August are clearly newcomers to watch for. They won the Have a Nice Gig contest, earning a chance to open for Bon Jovi in Washington, and Drowning Out The Television definitely has the promise to build on that success.

Opener “Only In Photographs” is a classy, highly melodic representation of the band’s trademark roots-rock sound, with plenty of chiming guitars and heartfelt vocals. “Opportunity” is possibly even better, as it progresses from a delicate verse into a vital, energetic and memorable rocker. “Overnight” and “The Quiet Sky” further hint at the songwriting skills of the band, but it’s the superb “Diamond Eyes” that best captures Honor By August’s potential.

Seeing acclaimed mixing engineer Jeff Juliano’s name in the credits provides further evidence that Honor By August are making giant leaps forward. A support slot with Bon Jovi won’t harm their career either.
