Everything Starts Where It Ends

The Militia Group

In the young music pool of the 21st Century it’s unfortunately necessary for a band to flirt with what’s popular in order to stay afloat. It’s why a band clearly influenced by the “alternative” music of the ’90s (namely Smashing Pumpkins and early Radiohead) has to jump on tours with the emo-centrics. It explains why Lovedrug is soon to be opening for Plain White T’s. Regularly, any band with such close ties to the mall-punk world is enough to scare me away, but this Ohio-based quartet surprised me.

So what can be expected upon giving Everything Starts Where It Ends a spin? Expansive melodies, theatrical vocals in the vein of Thom Yorke and Billy Corgan, pretty piano tones, and distorted guitars and aggressive drum beats. A soaring song like “Pushing the Shine” could have fit nicely on either The Bends or Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness, and for many of us who grew up on those albums, a song like this is like coming home.

Lovedrug should be spoken of in the company with such new – shall we call it “post-alternative” – artists as Mute Math, Sparta and Thrice. With any luck, it will be these artists that will cause what has been polluting our airwaves for years to go back into hibernation alongside rap-rock and boy bands.
