Savage Aural Hotbed

The Unified Pounding Theory

Innova Recordings

Let’s state up front that this is a terrific record –noisy, weird and pulsing with percussive energy. But it is, at the same time a disappointment, after you read the credits. See, they list as instruments common household items such as pipes, saws, air hammer, electric hand planer, etc. From that assortment, you’d expect a riotous cacophony, right? And while this is raucous stuff, it ain’t Einstürzende Neubauten or Throbbing Gristle reborn, alas. Rather, this is more tonally akin to the 2004 release from the Melvins and Lustmord, Pigs of the Roman Empire, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that. Pounding drums, concrete-on-skin guitars; that’s good stuff. It just isn’t as out there as you’d expect. Probably works well as background music to common household chores as bleach-washing the dog or mounting the rocket launcher on the SUV.
