Potentially deadly nuclear leak hid from public

Tenn. plant’s violations kept secret in the name of national security

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A three-year veil of secrecy in the name of national security was used to keep the public in the dark about the handling of highly enriched uranium at a nuclear fuel processing plant – including a leak that could have caused a deadly, uncontrolled nuclear reaction. The leak turned out to be one of nine violations or test failures since 2005 at privately owned Nuclear Fuel Services Inc., a longtime supplier of fuel to the U.S. Navy’s nuclear fleet.

Phone call put brakes on bridge repair

Internal MnDOT documents reviewed by the Star Tribune reveal that last year bridge officials talked openly about the possibility of the bridge collapsing – and worried that it might have to be condemned.

As our infrastructure crumbles around us, ultimately deadly problems are kept from the public, either by greed or the ruse of national security. There never seems to be the time or money to fix existing, documented problems, but we can print up enough cash to create new regulations requiring chicken farmers who use propane to register with the DHS. Madness.

Who watches the watchers? I’m holding out for…
