Truth to Power

Dexter

Now it doesn’t have the relevance of The Wire, or the great cast and writing of The Sopranos, but in some ways, Dexter is the greatest television show I’ve seen in recent memory. Dexter is a Miami forensic blood spatter analyst by day- but a serial killer at night.

Having spent far too much time as a youth reading about the grisly horrors of serial killers, I’m a natural for this sort of show. It seems to capture the alienation and loneliness of a sociopath- I say seems, because how would I know? I imagine watching this tale with a death row inmate would be an interesting exercise in fact checking, but since I ain’t gonna do that, I’ll just say it rings true to my ears. The relationship between Dexter and his father- who realizes early on what his adopted son truly is- is compelling, and somewhat reminiscent of Jeffery Dahmers fathers accounts. Dexter’s inner dialogue sounds frighteningly real, and brutal.

I can’t imagine that this show will appeal to all, but for those with a curiosity about the dark side, these 12 episodes are manna.
