This uncomfortable yet occasionally funny parody of a New Age self help seminar sums up all my fears about counseling and motivational speakers – they sound slick, but when you walk out, what’s really changed? Dr. Hawkfire is on hard times – her close personal friends Tony Robbins and Oprah aren’t returning calls, and a few new credit cards might boost her chi. She’s plugging the Wa-wa way, which somehow involves applying “The Silencer” to a hapless audience member. “The Silencer” is duct tape applied to hands and mouth, but unlike the revelation Roger Daltrey experienced in Tommy, all we get is a very uncomfortable audience and no comedic payoff.
The show continues in a scattershot vein covering the major new age cranks – money, colon cleansing, and Hearing Your Inner Soundtrack. All are weird enough to deserve merciless parody, but once we get the duct tape off poor old Sam, the highlight is Dr H stealing a hamburger from a hapless young lady in the front row. This is a high concept, low payout show, and it needs some serious Karmic Cleansing.
