Moreland & Arbuckle
1861
Northern Blues
Raw southern blues is fairly common. Really good southern blues is not so common. Really good southern blues from Kansas? That’s unheard of… until now. Moreland & Arbuckle bring the down home southern-fried blues a little north and west on their third album (and first for Northern Blues) 1861.
The album opens with a raucous version of Hound Dog Taylor’s “Gonna Send You Back to Georgia” followed by a moderate, but soothing “Fishin’ Hole.” The subdued “Tell Me Why” sounds like it could fit right into one of fellow blues-rocker Jonny Lang’s albums. The duo get their rock on very well on the following track, “Diamond Ring.”
Throughout the album the guitar of Aaron “Chainsaw” Moreland wraps around the vocals of Dustin Arbuckle creating blues just like Son House used to make.
1861 is exactly what you would expect from a good blues album: Great guitar solos, down-on-your-luck lyrics and something that you can really groove to.
