Golden Delicious

ATO

I love this album. I have not been able to get this out of my CD player since I first put it in. Mike Doughty’s second solo album Golden Delicious is perfect indie-pop for anyone who needs a good pick-me-up.

Doughty’s lyrical prowess is front-and-center as he proclaims on the opening track “Fort Hood” that “You should blast Young Jeezy with your friends in a parking lot.” His signature syncopation is spot-on on “I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep on Dancing.” These two songs are the best one-two punch that I’ve heard on any album all year.

Every song is instantly catchy and full of singalong choruses. Most notably are the first two tracks, the call-and-answer of “More Bacon Than the Pan Can Handle” and the story of how “I went to school with 27 Jennifers” and had a crush on one of the “27 Jennifers.”

Golden Delicious is what pop music should sound like. It should be as fun as it sounds, and it sounds like Mike Doughty had so much fun making this record, that I want to be a part of the next recording; even if I’m just singing background. There you go Mr. Doughty. I would love to be a part of the recording of your next album. If you read this, please say yes. If nothing else I hope you (and everyone else) reads this and knows just how much fun it is to listen to this album.
