Entanglements

Tomlab/Slender Means Society

Stay with me now.

Imagine if Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate/Jack’s Mannequin) sang in a Broadway musical written by The Dresden Dolls. If your brain hasn’t exploded with glitter and blood, then you’ll love Parenthetical Girls’ new album Entanglements. Shit, even if your brain is nothing but shimmering pulp, put yourself back together and let Zac Pennington (who reminds you of McMahon) sing you back to life.

Complete with plucked strings, waltzing horns, and tinkling glockenspiels, Entanglements is sprightly, sexy, and thick like honey. “A Song for Ellie Greenwich” slowly bounces and swings like a buzzed cotillion-goer, puffy gown and all. “Entanglements” followed up with “Abandoning” drives through the country on horseback with golden locks flying only to be met with a quiet, lilting Pennington, sounding a bit heartbroken and disappointed. “Windmills of Your Mind” showcases a maddening duet between Pennington and Rachael Jensen with spinning strings, spiraling into themselves. Finally, “The Regrettable End” sings you to sleep with a choir of angels in the background, humming hope that this is not the end, but merely a departure to somewhere grander.

Who they remind you of: The Dresden Dolls, Xiu Xiu, Tyrannosaurus Rex
