T.I.M.E. Soundtrack

Anticon

A soundtrack without a film is like a cell phone without a nearby tower – kinda cool for a few minutes, but ultimately not that interesting. That’s the curse of this skateboard-inspired soundtrack from the fine folks at Anticon. The disc came in the mail slot sans the film, This Is My Element, for which it was composed. That doesn’t make it bad, it just makes it stripped of context. Crafted to “the beat of polyurethane on pavement,” the sound is what a soundtrack should be: unobtrusive yet able to provide continuity between cuts and scenes. The music sounds arty enough; Odd Nosdam excels at a subdued street/hip-hop sound, and occasional flashes of retro-vinyl pops and hisses under a drum-and-bass based melody show that there was music before there was digital editing. As background audio for a day of dealing with office emails, it’s not bad, but it’s not what you need to get a party going, or to drive across Kansas at 3 a.m. Although Odd Nosdam holds its own, topping a skate anthem like “Holiday in Cambodia” would be nearly impossible.
