We Can Build an Island

SideCho

Charlemagne has a secluded vacation tucked away just for you called We Can Build an Island.

Throw on those orange-tinted sunglasses, poke your toes out of the car window, and drive parallel to the sunrise. This album reminds me of a beautiful day on the Pacific Coast Highway, lax and aimless, bouncing ankles to the beat of “Quivers on an Overpass.” The sun finally rises on “You Are My Diary” and temporarily blinds you with shining light.

The tempos of Island are never too fast, never too lingering, but the drums still pop and skip like a child on the sidewalk in summer. “Saturn Return” dips low, but “You Dipped Your Toes in Blood” shoves you back into the sunshine. In a song like this one, I’m reminded of Weezer’s blue album, while in earlier Island songs, I hear a bit of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Either way, it’s wonderful and fantastic. Each song is a delicious slice of perfection, summer warmth, and solace.

For that perfect beach day, We Can Build an Island is a tiny bit of paradise and refuge.
