Dirty Stuff

Dirty Stuff

By Johnny McGovern

Pink Venue, 2010 Orlando International Fringe Festival</strong>

I had trouble getting my head around this show, but the midnight audience I saw it with loved it. Johnny McGovern is an entertaining monologist, and this tale of multiple voices and eccentric personalities loosely revolves around a Saudi playboy and an unexpected parental visit. He brags about his money, his cash, and a phony fashion show he’s working on but now his folks are on a plane headed to NYC. I’m not sure if he actually IS a designer in this rambling tale, but we spend most of our time with his friends and acquaintances, including the burnt out Blaxplotation star “Chocolate Pudding.” Here’s where I had most of my trouble – while somewhere between offensive and moronic, Chocolate Pudding really turned me off. When we get to the final fashion show and the parental deception works, the story and it ending feel contrived. McGovern is fine on stage, but the writing backing his up is weak and rambling.
