Are we getting close to a “heads on a pike” moment?
Democrats unlikely to repeal tax cuts for the rich
WASHINGTON – Democrats in Congress are poised to play a leading role this month in thwarting their party’s effort to raise income tax rates on the wealthy.
Tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 expire at the end of this year. President Barack Obama and Democratic congressional leaders have been eager to extend the breaks for individuals who earn less than $200,000 annually and joint filers who make less than $250,000. Those who earn more would pay higher, pre-2001 rates starting next year.
However, a small but growing number of moderate Democrats are balking at boosting taxes on the rich. Many face electorates that recoil at the mention of any tax increase. Some represent areas that are loaded with wealthier taxpayers. Further, some incumbent senators who don’t face voters this fall are reluctant to increase taxes on anyone while the economy remains sluggish.
Without their support, the push to raise rates on the rich probably will fail.</em>
Two things need to occur sometime soon. First, the Bush gimmie to the wealthy needs to expire, allowing the tax rate on those earning above 250k to return to what it was under Clinton…remember, the last time we had a functioning economy for the majority of the citizens, not just the 1% with all the cash? Secondly, lose the cap on Social Security that stops counting income at 106k. Why should I pay SS taxes on ALL my income while Daddy Warbucks Sachs doesn’t? How is that remotely fair?
This country, since the reign of St. Ronnie, has been run as a giant ATM for the rich. They hire legions of agents to rewrite the laws so that their theft of the nation’s wealth is “legal”, while the rest of us pay our taxes, and theirs as well. Then they out source the jobs we need to India, “relocate” their company to a post office box in the Cayman Islands, and skip paying those taxes as well. All the while using OUR roads, OUR public works, etc, without paying for it.
Is that remotely fair? Is that the sort of thing that makes you bound out of bed each morning, eager to work for eight hours just to hear some robber baron boo hoo over paying their fair share, instead of stealing ours?
So we need to send simple telegrams to any Democrat who buys into this GOP gimmie gimmie it all “tax increase” bullshit. You vote for this, we mount your head on a spike on Constitution Avenue, and sell tickets so your former supporters (of which I’m surely not one) can hock a wad in your decomposing face.
