Paper Lions
My Friends
Fountain Pop Records
Trust the Canadians to not get overly excited about anything. This nice little disc comes from the rather obscure Prince Edward Island, and it’s positive, downright relaxing rock and roll that just feels north of the border.
True, opener “Bodies in the Winter” is a bit up-tempo, but that’s a trickster move. “Ghostwriters” is a ballad dripping with multiple harmonies and Chris Isaak-laden vocals and is as lush an arrangement as you’ll hear this side of Nelson Riddle. “Little Rider” sparkles with vocals from John and Rob MacPhee, and the guys backing them up (Colin Buchanan on lead, David Cyrus MacDonald on skins) are no slackers, either.
Small town roots certainly don’t translate into small town sounds. I’d put these guys up against anyone. I can go on about the songs: “My Friends are Leaving” is a dirge to loneliness and abandonment, the boys have “Philadelphia” on their minds, and “Sandcastles” are built to wash away. Pick any tune on this collection. They’re all infectious and bursting with joy. Paper Lions is a band with heart.
