Corsets and Cuties

Black Venue, Orlando Fringe Festival

Loch Haven Park, Orlando, FL</strong>

This commentary is based on a technical rehearsal.

Enter. Strip. Stop. Enter. Strip. Stop. Enter. Strip. Stop. So many burlesque nights amount to little more than this cycle with the possible embellishment of superhero or video game veneers. I don’t find 8 bit anything erotic but this troupe of dancers and entertainers can actually entertain and look like FHD1080p. They sing real songs; pull off elaborate dance numbers, stay on key, and even kick like a proper chorus line should. These gals (and one versatile guy with the unfortunate name “Jax N. Auph”) operate somewhere between Early Betty Page and Late Sally Bowles; they come in a selection of body types; and they damn sure keep your attention. “Lady Jaimz” hosts the show; more than an emcee and less than a chorus liner her mothering instincts protect both the crowd and the cast all for everyone’s best interests: give the girls money, but keep your mitts off the merchandise. The routines are sharp and snappy: “Keep Your Hat On” did exactly that; a striking red head named Babs Bordeaux danced with an inflated Frankenstein to “Deep Love” and Kaddy Laq’s “Hot Stuff” was, well, hot stuff. Best of all: no lip syncing! Some specialty acts rolled through including a Gorilla Stripper and that operatic classic “Otto Titsling.” Naturally there was a giant sex toy and it got its own round of applause. Those things always do for some reason, but they can’t dance for poop. The chairs are tight and the sound is rough but the show was much more exciting that the old “Enter. Strip. Stop.” routine. So stop seeing those other shows and see this much more artistic event.
