Marian: Lost in Fiction

Marian: Lost in Fiction

Orlando, FL</strong>

Mashups are a big thing here at the Orlando Fringe, and some just work better than others. In this admixture of Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Hunger Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Jane Austen, and Greek mythology the story suffers from the same problem as using every Crayola in the box – you end up with a greyish mess that no one can decode. Marian dresses like Belle and works in the library; a lightning bolt strikes mixing all the story elements, and it’s up to her to sort them out. The Cheshire Cat provides helpful tips and plot points as we journey to multiple lands. For a small play there are plenty of scene changes with stuff dragged hither and yon; it’s only the re-written tunes from “Spam-A-Lot” and “Pippin” and “Delovey” that adds any grounding to the story. The costumes are cute, the sword fights epic, and the music is fun, but the story is more complex than a NASA prelaunch checklist and scene changes drain what energy the hard working cast builds up when presenting lines.

This Commentary was prepared from a technical rehearsal.
