The Doug White Quintet

Forever

Juniper Records

This is an enticing and charming collection of tunes from the Doug White Quintet, combining standards and originals. The musicianship levels in the band reach world-class heights, but even more impressively, White’s lead work on the saxophone is nothing short of phenomenal. There is a vocal, human-like element to his playing which really makes every note resonate, not only physically, but on a deeper, metaphorical emotional level.

The album features nine astonishing studio tracks, including the romantic “Waltz for Cynthia,” and the mellow “Tenderly,” which stand out as two of my favorite songs on this release. “Forever” is a true sonic treat, with a tone that feels so appealing and smooth, catering to listeners from all walks of life. You don’t have to be a jazz fan to appreciate the musicality of this remarkable effort, as these melodies and arrangements are truly universally appealing.
