Marcelo Maccagnan

Boundless

Artist and songwriter Marcelo Maccagnan released a brand new studio project titled Boundless.

This happens to be the second full-length album with himself as a band leader for this talented NYC-based guitarist and composer. The album has a very organic feel, and its production reflect the magical, instinctive nature of the performance captured. The whole record was performed and recorded in Marcelo’s apartment, as the musicians got set up in the living room, achieving the best possible sound. With such professional players in the fold, the process was definitely effortless! The album features some world-class performances by Andrew Cheng, as well as Kelvin Andreas, who complemented Marcelo’s playing beautifully. The album begins with the song “Husks,” a tasteful composition that unfold over the span of about 7 minutes.

The second track is titled “Land of No Heroes,” and it happens to be the longest song on the album. It has a cinematic, soothing feel to it, which comes through in the form of the minimalist production aesthetics. The song “Boundless” is an example of how Andrew, Marcelo, and Kelvin managed to achieve a really interesting chemistry, playing with different ideas and adding more to the focus of the album, in terms of broadening its creative horizons.

“Don’t Think” stands out as my personal favorite, because I think this track really encapsulate the spirit of what this album stands for: facilitating free-form creativity and redefining the idea of what jazz music could be all about. “Dreamcatcher” is another stunning composition, which combines some beautiful atmospheric parts with some memorable textures.

Last, but not least, “Closed Eyes” is a perfect way to conclude this beautiful release. Each one of these six tracks offer something special to the evolution of the set list of the album, turning it into a listening experience that begs to be enjoyed from top to bottom.

Ultimately, this release is highly recommended to any jazz fan who likes a more modern interpretation of the genre, with ideas that tip the hat off to elements of fusion, and even progressive music.
