Robert Wyatt
Shleep
Thirsty Ear
Sometimes, you can tell someone has been around a while. Though I’d never heard of Robert Wyatt, the opening track on Shleep immediately let me know that this was an accomplished and talented songwriter. A quick review of the liner notes revealed some Names: Brian Eno and Paul Weller. Further research yielded more interesting facts – none of which really change the one truth about Wyatt: he is a man who follows an unusual muse, yielding unconventional melodies and a sound that is experimental without suffering the risk of alienation. Lyrics are oblique with meaning. This is record of unexpected depth and originality; as I hear it, Thirsty Ear will be releasing selections from Wyatt’s back catalogue, and the world will be a richer place for it.
