Wow, what a difference a few years can make. The Murmurs have transformed themselves from the odd, cotton candy haired duo who brought the world “You Suck” a few years ago. They are older and more mature, with a record that no one can dismiss as cute or a novelty. Now I personally loved the sound and style on the Murmurs’ self-titled album, but I can also appreciate the new direction the band is taking. They are still producing harmonious pop, but they’ve expanded their sound to include a full band and a fuller sound. Heather and Leisha have joined forces with producers Matthew Wilder and k.d. lang, and even co-wrote a song, “Smash,” with former Go-Go’s’ Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey. The sound is rich and sophisticated with their intricate harmonies and wry song writing still in place. The new Murmurs sound may come as a bit of a surprise to fans of their old sound, but rest assured they haven’t sold out – just moved up.
