Mega Super Ultra

Power Pop Art

Jump Up!

If imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery, then Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, and Joe Jackson must be feeling pretty touched right about now. Of course, they probably would have been a lot more flattered if Mega Super Ultra did a good imitation of them, but hey, you can’t have it all. The tunes on Power Pop Art are shamelessly derivative, and while occasionally catchy (as on “SALT”), just don’t sustain anywhere near the interest that going back to old Jam or Attractions records would – not that most bands’ debut records would, but most other bands aren’t so desperate to imitate that which has come before. Then again, it worked for Oasis, so maybe I’m wrong, and Mega Super Ultra will be huge. But I wouldn’t bet This Year’s Model on it…
