Morphine
B-Sides and Otherwise
Rykodisc
These days, liking Morphine feels really adult. Strange, since what struck me about the first time I heard Morphine was how much they reminded me of a college fave, Treat Her Right. Turns out Morphine is a subset – Mark Sandman, Dana Colley, Billy Conway – of the aforementioned Boston band, a similarly low and spooky ensemble.
So now we are at the juncture of Morphine’s career, where not only we’ve accumulated enough “lost” tracks, but their old label is actually interested in releasing them…
I say let Rykodisc make their money. The ticket price is worth the ride – live tracks, pieces from soundtracks, B-sides (duh) and bonus tracks show that for the most part, Morhpine is nothing but consistently good. Adulthood be damned.
