Seventeen songs here, friends. On vinyl (or CD), a certain recipe for a dance party, Here Comes Treble is a sign of the times when a bargain was a bargain. The Hate Bombs embrace a work/play ethic that’s unmatched in these parts. Live shows remedy boredom like Jonas Salk was their manager. And they tour, release singles and sweat. With incendiary live shows as theirs, it’s no small task to make a record that moves the rump but Here Comes Treble is their gift to us and move it does.
As gifts go, the record is full of Hate Bombs’ hits about girls and boys and the junk they do to/for each other, including “She’s No Good,” “Shake,” “You Lied” and “Like It That Way” but the surprise rests in numbers like “Going All The Way” with its bluesy two-note keyboard line and “Can’t Trust No One” as Dave’s vocals approximate Bon Scott with no trace of irony. Organ, piano and harmonica embellish the layers of fuzzed0out guitars (Dave/Mick) and bass (Scott) propelled by Ken’s tireless drumming.
Despite the title, the mix is balanced on vinyl and doesn’t splinter at higher volumes. The Hate Bombs don’t subject you to filler, and ballads are left behind to eat dust.
