MC5

Babes In Arms

ROIR

Being a collection of out-takes, uncensored versions, and demos from the awesome MC5, there’s not much I can say to augment or diminish the greatness of this release. The MC5 are almost certainly the acorn from which the mighty oak of punk rock has grown. I can imagine, in my mind’s eye, a young Iggy Pop standing in the front row in some Detroit gymnasium, bathing in the dual guitar attack of Fred “Sonic” Smith and Wayne Kramer, or in front of a mirror, stereo blasting, with his fist in the air screaming “Kick Out the Jams!” The MC5 were always too rowdy, too loud, and too controversial to ever be a big commercial success, and so they have been forever relegated to the status of “highly influential,” which is an understatement of the first order. This collection represents a great cross-section of the elements that make this band a national treasure – the driving, electric blues roots, the jazzy experimentation, the uncompromised social commentary and the take-no-prisoners live shows. Own it. ROIR, 611 Broadway, Suite 411, New York, NY 10012
