Soundtrack

Interstate/London

Wow. Bang your fucking brains out. But see the movie first. The movie will change your life. If you like or can relate to white trash, violence in the name of conquering boredom, or retardsploitation, you’re in heaven (it will be at Tampa Theatre soon; check your local calendar for your town). The soundtrack is half of the film’s grace. It is an adept composite of the fucked-up glue sniffing redneck teenager, seen from the (it seems increasingly regional) Southern M.E.T.A.L. embracement. And, relatedly, the industrialish realm. Embarking at a slower pace but still more alienating is Burzum’s “Rundgang um die transzendentale Säule der Singularitat.” Breaking with motif, there is a mellifluous cello suite – prelude by the Rostropovich-apprenticed Mischa Maisky, and an a cappella rendition of “Jesus Loves Me.” I was extremely upset that the outré folk song from the opening sequence of the film was not included. It represents the film well, and is used in its trailers.

Believe it or not, there really isn’t that much M.E.T.A.L. here in Tampa, and it does not permeate daily life for us, provincial though we may be. I hear there is black metal and speed metal and death metal all on here, though I can not be sure of it as I’m no expert. I know it’s the good stuff, though, because some of it is of Scandinavian. Or at least it looks to be, a Germanic language, not quite German. I could be wrong. Regardless, no Germanic-language country messes around when it comes to metal. R.O.C.K.
