Devin Townsend

Ocean Machine

HevyDevy

This new album has all the vocal soul, craftsmanship, and detail that I could have dreamed of (and more) from the big-balled skinny Canadian whiz-kid geek named Devin Townsend. There are several obvious and curious differences between Ocean Machine and his other band, Strapping Young Lad. The lyrical ambiguity and calmness show his more laid-back and romantic side, which some people may not expect from someone with such a clear understanding of the music business. The highlights of the album include the beautiful, colossal, counterpoint vocal harmonies of “Hide Nowhere,” the simple and sentimental ballad “Things Beyond Things,” and the extremely poppy “Life,” which lyrics sound astonishingly like he’s been trapped in one too many painful midnight Denny’s conversations with William Maier.
