Anyone who starts their album off with a sample from the Happy Flowers is OK in my book. Dump is essentially James McNew, also known for his work as bassist for Yo La Tengo. The Happy Flowers connection comes from the days when McNew was the Flowers’ roadie, or more realistically, their friend with a car.
Dump is the four-track outlet of McNew’s fertile musical garden. The sound ranges from fuzzed to folk, but overall feels open and improvised. Some moments are so unusual as to be completely inspiring. There’s a cover of a French song (“Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi”), the Tall Dwarfs-sounding “White Worms” and the chiming Galaxie 500-ness of “Made For It.” A Plea for Tenderness is interesting for its variety and lack of self-consciousness.
