The pre-release buzz was that this new Makers album would be a major departure from their previous work. I’d say it’s more of an evolution, since Psychopathia Sexualis is unmistakably a Makers album. In fact, only four tracks of the thirteen featured here are slower than the usual Makers full-tilt boogie. And, one of those tracks (“The Mystery”) has enough tasty guitar arabesques to more than make up for the slower tempo.
As for the faster songs on this album, they are all up to the high standards laid down by previous Makers songs. Standouts include the semi-radio-friendly screamer “(Are You on the Inside or the Outside of Your) Pants?” and the two-song knockout punch of “Turn Up the Century” and “Whiskey Dog Mind.” But it’s all good.
Seattle stalwart Jack Endino shares production chores with vocalist Michael Maker. They achieve a big sound with sharp teeth, showcasing the band’s technical brilliance quite well at every point on the volume dial. Of course, for full enjoyment this album should be played at high volume.
