Nick Heyward

The Apple Bed

Big Deal

Oh, it’s swinging London, baybee! You can almost hear Austin Powers shrieking through the halls during the recording. This is Brit-Pop, Beatles-style – strummy guitars, dynamic little drop-outs, and sweeping strings that echo Jeff Lynne with a marvy warm butterscotch sound.

Think of a less cynical or sharp XTC, a softer Oasis, and you’ll be on the right track. Heyward seems determined to leave his Haircut 100 ’80s far behind him (thank heavens!). Instead he plants himself in 1960s London, McCartney on one side of the street, the Kinks on the other. Echoed vocals, crunching guitars, and even a sitar are elements of the sound, braced with some nifty Beach Boy style harmony vocals.

This is a fun record – dig out your Cuban heel boots and dance. This is pop, not brain surgery, remember? Big Deal, P.O. Box 2072, Peter Stuyvesant Station, New York, NY 10009
