Vinnie and the Stardüsters

Novelty Music for Casual Sex

Gourmandizer

How can it be that I can listen to this over and over? It’s stupid, juvenile, loaded with cheap shots and clichés, and… OK, fuckit, it’s funny as hell. Vinnie and the Stardüsters not only grind up rockdom’s sacred cows into hot dogs, they proceed to serve them with mint sauce on a banana-nut muffin. Example: “Quesadilla: a Tortilla with Cheez/Walk Around Naked” features musical cues from “Que Sera Sera” and “Paperback Writer.” There’s “Bake My Pie,” (aka “Boys Don’t Cry”), and “I’m Committing Suicide,” reminiscent of “Walking on Sunshine,” is followed by “I’m All a-Walkin’ on the Sunshine,” a dirty reggae version. The official musical festivities end with “Pandemonium,” a medley of “Climb Every Mountain,” a bit of polka Mozart and Bach, “Mairzy Doats” and – ahem – “Bela Lugosi’s Shed.”

Following this mayhem is a series of about fifteen or so phone messages, mostly songs recorded on voice mail by an uncredited party – someone get that person a recording contract. The album ends with “Ode to a Pig,” a touching tale of childhood trauma, and the appropriately titled “XXXMas Song.”
