Purr Machine

Ging Ging

Re-Constriction

Dark-pop perfection has been achieved with the song “Regarding Mary,” one of the most wonderful lab accidents ever!!! Flawless – and I am talking porcelain here – mix of Cocteau-twin style vocal layerings and bubbling electronic ambience. I could listen to this song on repeat for hours! Sadly, I did. Sadly, the rest of the album did not stand out for me nearly as much.

Ging Ging straddles the line between “competent” and “enjoyable,” but not much else. Sometimes the vocals veer a bit too close to Morrisette-isms for my taste, and sometimes I find myself anticipating the end of a song. To their credit, Purr Machine are more organic and visceral than your typical Reconstriction fare, but they have a bit more stylistic growth ahead of them. As a snapshot of musical development, Ging Ging is entrenched in the Sneaker Pimps, (kind of) Bjork, the Banshees, and the Nymphs. Did I mention they do a lush cover of “Send Me An Angel”? I would be remiss if I forgot to mention that. Everyone loves a good new wave cover.
