Bomb

Lovesucker

Wingnut

Michael W. Dean returns to Bomb after a couple of sidetracks, and truth be told, things haven’t changed much since last I heard them. Heavy and rhythmical in the early ’90s tradition of the Jesus Lizard and other Chicago hopefuls, San Francisco’s Bomb feature Dean’s tortured and sometimes operatic vocals soaring above the sonic murk at the bottom. The lyrics appear to come from the pit of depression, as in “Die” (chorus: “Die/ Die/ Die/ Die”) and the opening “Painglorious.” A cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” is fairly tolerable, though I’m usually the first to make fun of DM. Closing things off is “Whore Love” – as you’d expect, just another sappy love song.
